In an article I wrote for this paper June 20, I expressed hope for a day when our multicultural nation will live in harmony. I acknowledged that we cannot erase hatred in people’s hearts, and we had the responsibility to send a compelling message within the parameter of our laws that hate crimes will not be tolerated. And I respectfully posed several questions to my colleagues, urging them to pass a hate crimes bill, legislation that I have worked on for three years.
